Monterra Single Vineyard Grenache 2025, Blewitt Springs

Monterra Single Vineyard Grenache 2025, Blewitt Springs

Mike Farmilo is one of the legends behind Monterra. Back in the early 1990’s, Mike was making some of the finest wines at Penfolds while I was doing the Chardonnay Baumé barrel rounds on Saturday mornings (usually after getting home from the Vine Inn or the TH in the early hours). We crossed paths again years later in McLaren Vale. Mike, James Halliday and Charlie Whish were my inspiration and mentors when we were promoting Grenache in the early 2010s. And here we are.

I can see Mike’s fine work in the colour, flavour, tannin and structure of this delightful Grenache. He’s a mastermind. These wines can be quite tight to start with, but they take a little time to show themselves; like a rubber band on a ruler about to take off…..

Bright ruby with vibrant crimson hue; the colour is already singing.

Wild strawberry, raspberry and red cherry lead the nose, layered with rose petal and dried thyme.

The palate is medium-bodied and pure, with red berry fruit, silky tannins and lively natural acidity. Hints of cranberry, subtle spice and earthy savouriness add complexity on the way to a moreish, graceful finish. There is real tannin and texture. This is no lolly pop. Give it time. Need I say more?

Vino Masters Score: 96/100 ★★★★★ A beautifully balanced Blewitt Springs Grenache delivering purity and elegance.
