Monterra GSM 2025, McLaren Vale

Mike Farmilo is one of the legends behind Monterra and he does it again here (just take a look at some of the older Willunga 100 or Five Geese Grenache/GSM wines).

They say we buy with our eyes, and this colour is bang on. Colour is such an important part of GSM…. if we get the colour right, we’ve usually got the blend right. We should just be able to see our fingers through the glass, so we really shouldn’t need too much salt and pepper in the mix.

Deep ruby with vibrant crimson hues. Fragrant and generous, with raspberry, black cherry and ripe plum leading the nose, joined by dried herbs and a touch of baking spice.

The palate is medium to full-bodied with layers of red and dark berry fruit, supple tannins and balanced acidity. Savoury herbs, cocoa and gentle spice build complexity on the way to a smooth, lingering finish. It’s a little tight to start, so give it a breath or two and watch it unfold. It’s alive.
