Kilikanoon ‘Ashton’ Mataro 2022, Clare Valley
From 1920 vines, this is proper old-vine Mataro. Deep ruby in the glass. Blackberry and blueberry jump out first, then fennel seed, bay leaf, liquorice, dried herbs and a nice earthy kick. Bit of violet in there too that keeps it lively. The palate is medium-bodied but it has plenty going on. Silky tannins hold it all together while dark fruit, spice, a touch of smoked meat and a savoury edge roll on through. Fresh acidity and lusciousness keep it humming. Beautifully balanced, generous, savoury, and powerful.
