Maverick Wines 2022 Ancestor Vine Grenache, Barossa Valley
Maverick Wines 2022 Ancestor Vine Grenache, Barossa Valley
For my first taste of the long-awaited Maverick Wines from the Barossa, I dived straight into the Grenache. I hadn’t noticed the words Ancestor Vine on the bottle, but one taste and it was immediately obvious that this was seriously old-vine material.
Delicious from the outset, savoury and spicy, with firm, beautifully integrated tannins and layers of Morello cherry, graphite and dark spice. It’s thick and luscious, yet somehow glides seamlessly across the palate, maintaining wonderful freshness and precision. Orange peel, mandarin and cherry chocolate bring a distinctly Jaffa-like character, while that savoury old-vine depth keeps building underneath.
Powerful, supple and incredibly composed, with a finish that just seems to go on forever. My first Maverick, and I am now very happy and content with my day.
