Powell & Son Marananga Ironstone Shiraz 2023, Barossa Valley
Powell & Son Marananga Ironstone Shiraz 2023, Barossa Valley
This is a powerful and deeply concentrated Shiraz from the ironstone-rich soils of Marananga. Deep crimson-purple in colour, it opens with powerful aromas of blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry, layered with dark chocolate, licorice, graphite and spices.
On the palate it is super rich and concentrated, with layers of ripe black fruit flowing across a dense, velvety frame. Notes of mocha, black pepper, anise, savoury earth, leather and burnt toffee emerge through the mid-palate, supported by an impressive array of fine-grained tannins. The wine shows the influence of a well-handled, charred and toasted oak regime that adds depth and structure without overpowering the fruit. It carries excellent freshness and balance for its weight, finishing long with exceptional concentration and persistence.
One of the best 2023 BV Shiraz we have tasted!
Vino Masters Score: 98/100 ★★★★★ An impressive Marananga Shiraz delivering concentration, structure and exquisite regional character.
Ironstone influence on Shiraz
Ironstone soils tend to push Shiraz toward a more savoury, mineral, and structured expression. As well as the pure dark fruits and chocolate, you often also see an added layer of ironstone/ferrous character with earthy notes, and a firmer savoury texture. This is why some Barossa ‘Shirazes’, including this Powell & Son Shiraz, show that distinctive savoury plush quality with a mineral/iron-like edge. It’s very distinctive and also highly satisfying for serious red wine lovers!
