Burge Family Winemakers ‘Barrel Selection’ Shiraz 2022, Barossa Valley

Burge Family Winemakers Barrel Selection Shiraz 2022, Barossa Valley

This is the pinnacle of Burge Family Winemakers.

Deep and inviting aromatically, revealing blackberry, blueberry and dark plum layered with dark chocolate, cedar spice and savoury notes.

The palate is full-bodied with rich dark berry fruit gliding across the entry before exotic tannins tighten the wine into a long and structured frame. Notes of mocha, liquorice and cracked pepper emerge through the mid-palate with excellent depth and persistence, while oak integration adds polish and complexity. The finish is long, layered and savoury with lingering spice and dark fruit richness. Classic and Barossan.

Vino Masters Score: 96 / 100
★★★★★ A powerful and beautifully composed Barossa Shiraz with depth, texture and excellent balance.

Vintage

Vintage 2022 was an outstanding vintage for producing elegant and fruit driven reds. With good winter and spring rainfall a good crop of grapes ripened in ideal climatic conditions. The 2022 growing season was cool and dry, allowing the grapes to hang so they could be picked at optimum ripeness with great flavour and acid balance.

Vineyards

The 2022 Burge Family Barrel Selection Shiraz is from two premium vineyard sites in the Barossa Valley, with 89% coming from 100 year old vines in Seppeltsfield. The remaining 11% comes from our 40 year old estate vineyard in Stockwell. The soils on the Seppeltsfield vineyards are primarily red-brown loams over red clay, with scattered ironstone and quartz. The vineyard sits at an altitude of 280-320m above sea level. Our Stockwell vineyard again has re loamy soil but predominantly over limestone.

Winemaking

As the name suggests this wine is a selection of the best barrels from the vintage. All batches are fermented separately so different winemaking techniques can be employed to build complexity into the wine. The techniques employed on the different batches included pre-ferment maceration, whole bunch and wild fermentation. The wine is then matured in about 50% new French oak with the balance used Hogshead barrels for twenty four months. The wine naturally clarifies, so the wine is bottled without filtration. We aim to make a bright fruited, drinkable wine with enough flavour and character to keep the drinker interested.
