We all know GSM has become a kind of modern-day ‘Claret’, the everyday, medium-bodied red that people reach for. The combination draws directly from the Rhône Valley, where Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvèdre in France) form the backbone of many Côtes du Rhône reds. The appellation allows a wide palette of varieties (around two dozen), but these three remain the heart of the Australian style, and we do them exceptionally well here in the Clare, Barossa and McLaren Vale.
