Wines of Merritt Cabernet Franc 2024, Margaret River

I reckon this is Sam Brand’s favourite variety, as a straight wine or in a Cabernet blend. The best I ever had was a 1984 Knappstein Clare Valley Cabernet Franc after a session at The Royal. I still remember it.

Deep crimson with a purple core. Blackcurrant, cherry and plum, then violet, fresh herb and spice. Medium to full and finely textured. Generous blueberry fruit, fresh acid, fine tannin. Wild yeast and basket press for savoury depth. Old oak leaves the variety in front. Long, elegant finish of dark fruit, herbal spice and a little earth. Delicious work.
