Z Wine [HEIN] Ancestor Vine Shiraz 2022, Barossa Valley

Z Wine [HEIN] Ancestor Vine Shiraz 2022, Barossa Valley

This is a remarkable piece of Barossa history. The Shiraz comes from the Hein family vineyard at Langmeil, where the vines are believed to be around 140 years old, growing in loam over red clay and gravelly limestone. Only one barrel was produced in 2022.

The wine is richly textured, with an amazing black liquorice character running through the palate, matched by a distinct charcoal nuance. Dark plum, blackberry and ripe red fruits bring a natural fruit sweetness, while savoury spice, earthy complexity and fine tannins add depth and balance. There is generosity here, but also plenty of detail, with the charcoal and liquorice notes giving the wine a very individual personality. Rich, concentrated and compelling, with real old-vine presence.

Vino Masters Score: 98/100 ★★★★★ A magnificent Barossa Shiraz of extraordinary concentration, refinement and complexity, displaying the pedigree and longevity of exceptional ancestor-vine fruit.
