Hewitson Old Garden Mourvèdre 2023, Barossa Valley

Hewitson Old Garden Mourvèdre 2023, Barossa Valley

Deep crimson with a dark, brooding core. Intensely savoury and earthy. Dark plum, dried herbs, spice, leather and rustic whole-bunch complexity.

Firm, savoury and old-school. Dark fruit sits under earth, spice and rustic tannin. The 100% whole-bunch fermentation adds grip, structure and a wild edge. French oak supports without taking over. The finish is dry, earthy and persistent.

The Old Garden Vineyard was planted in 1853 and holds the oldest Mourvèdre vines on Earth. Original, ungrafted, pre-Phylloxera vines, dry-farmed and hand-tended across three centuries. Just eight rows remain. The 2023 yielded 3.16 tonnes per hectare and was matured for 18 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques.

Rare and deeply savoury. More about earth, structure and rustic complexity than overt fruit. It needs time in the glass. Decant for at least one hour.

Vino Masters Score: 95/100 ★★★★★ Oldest Mourvèdre vines on Earth. Earthy, rustic and persistent. Drink now to 2038
